Hello,

I am currently freelancing for a well known mass-market clothing company but I would like to go full-time for a smaller, more family-like company making beautiful women's attire. Does anyone know anyone looking to hire an assistant or associate in product development/ pre-production? I am a hard worker and very talented - but finding the right position is often difficult.

Thanks for your help!
Lauren

Favorite designers?

These "favorites" lists seem to be popular thread topics in all the other tribes, so I thought I'd start one here. My absolute favorite designer is Alexander McQueen, and that's mostly what I wear when I go out. I've always been "alternative" since my early teens, and I grew into a huge McQueen fan after his first hard-edged, punk- and goth-inspired collections. I was a huge Gaultier fan starting in high school and through the '90s until I switched to McQueen. Gaultier was so creative, and then when he started doing haute couture in '97 he stopped doing his own ready-to-wear collections (or am I not supposed to tell anyone that?) his collections went way downhill. He used to be the hottest French designer for over a decade, and now he's considered a relatively minor designer, which is sad. I also love women's Comme des Garcons, since I really like creative, avant-garde designers. And rounding out the top three would be vintage Stephen Sprouse. I think he was really underrated back in the day, which is a shame. I was into Galliano menswear for one season (Fall '04), but I'm kind of over it now. And I was on a Dries Van Noten kick for a few seasons there, but I'm over that, too. I started McQueen, CdG, and Sprouse tribes if anyone's interested. I have to do some work on them first, though. So who are your favorite designers?

I've decided to go back and get a degree in fashion design. Does anyone have suggestions of schools? Does a bachelor's matter versus an AA? I already have a BS-Psychology and was hoping to go back for a year or two for fashion design? Does it matter what school, or is it just important to take the classes?

Any suggestions/help would be so much appreciated!

Thank you!

Wang to Design for Kohl's

The other day I was on Women Wear Daily's website and I caught a snipet of an article saying that Vera Wang will be designing a line for Kohl's department store called "Very Vera," or something to that effect. See Below:

NEW YORK — After a courtship of almost two years, Vera Wang has finally said "I do" to Kohl's Corp.

The designer and Kohl's said Wednesday that they will team up to create a premium fashion and lifestyle brand called Very Vera by Vera Wang, which will be available at more than 900 Kohl's moderate department stores and kohls.com beginning in fall 2007.

My first reaction to this news was shock and sadness. Vera Wang is known for her beautiful and prestigious wedding dresses. It seems like she is selling-out if she is starting to design for Kohl's department store. Why? Why? I am worried that it will taint her name instead of raising the brand image of Kohl's. What does everyone think about this news?

There was a mini-article in last week's Time about how the Paris collections are moving toward covering up the body as much as possible. Some people say it's a shift from the lack of enthusiasm for body-baring outfits of the past few seasons, and others claim it's the "Muslimification" of fashion since the Middle East is on everyone's minds lately. Discuss.

Looking for clothing designers who are going to Burningman this year, who would like to submit a small collection for a fashion show at Burningman. Any designers, who wish to participate, will be expected to attend all meetings during the summer, have ideas/sketches and garments due at proposed dates, and be willing to help out before/during/ and after the show. Example: finding models, creative ideas in terms of choreography and music, set up/clean up and distributing flyers, finding volunteers to do make up ect. We have the space/camp. The theme will be that of this years burn, but with our own creative interest. The ideal time of the show will be later in the week during the mid afternoon (so we have natural lighting, less to worry about) but will not be a guarantee
, until enough designers have agreed to take on this project. Email me with any questions.
Thank you

But I am a total sucker for Louis styling, baroque brocades, and off-white lace and tulle. Other than that I was really disappointed with the Spring '06 collections. What were some of your favorites (or disappointments) for Spring '06?

Santino is entertaining, but his use of trim drives me crazy!

Hey everyone, sorry for the shameless plug for the Alexander McQueen tribe, but if anyone wanted to join it please do so before December 20th. As most of you know, tribe.net is going to enforce new Terms of Use starting December 20th, and the Alexander McQueen tribe was switched to a "Mature" tribe because there is a boob here and there in some of the runway photos in the tribe gallery. I didn't think it was fair to have to delete those runway photos, so the tribe is going to stay classified as "Mature". Or immature, whatever... Which didn't make me bug until I got yet another message from the "content guy" at tribe.net to all the "porn" tribes this morning saying that after December 20th all "Mature" tribes will be by invitation only. Meaning I don't think it will be listed in the searches anymore if someone puts in (heh heh... puts in... heh...) Alexander McQueen. Just thought I'd put this out there (heh heh... put out... heh...) If they only knew how immature I really am!

Katrina Victims Get Seized Knockoff Items

By LARRY MARGASAK, Associated Press Writer
Mon Sep 5, 5:49 PM ET

WASHINGTON - The Yves St. Laurent and Tommy Hilfiger labels may be phony, but the thousands of Hurricane Katrina victims getting knockoff items seized by federal customs officials probably don't mind.

Displaced survivors in the Houston Astrodome can choose from counterfeit and abandoned clothing, toys, and even dog food.

More than 100,000 items were quickly taken from warehouses and more will follow, said Kristi Clemens, spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security's Customs and Border Protection division.

The agency has some 1 million items stored, and Customs officials are going through their inventory to see what else would be useful. While the initial shipment went to Texas, officials are looking toward a wider distribution, Clemens said.

For humans, virtually anything that you can wear is available: underwear, jeans, baseball caps, T-shirts, shoes and socks. For dogs: much needed food. For children, toys. For everyone: clean sheets and blankets.

Clemens said officials are looking for locations to deliver items in Louisiana and Mississippi, and then will scout for shelters in other states.

American businesses lose up to $250 billion annually from knockoffs, according to figures released in a Senate hearing. Federal officials seized $138 million in counterfeited goods last year, up from $94 million in 2003.

Counterfeit clothing currently accounts for about 18 percent of seized items.

Law enforcement officials and other experts have testified that counterfeit clothing and other goods have been traced to supporters of terror organizations.

Most counterfeit items come from China, the United Arab Emirates, Pakistan and Russia, according to Customs officials.

Move over Rambo, you're cramping new man's style

PARIS (AFP) - Macho man is an endangered species, with today's male more likely to opt for a pink flowered shirt and swingers' clubs than the traditional role as family super-hero, fashion industry insiders say.

A study along these lines led by French marketing and style consultants Nelly Rodi was unveiled to Fashion Group International during a seminar Tuesday on future strategy for the fashion industry in Europe.

"The masculine ideal is being completely modified. All the traditional male values of authority, infallibility, virility and strength are being completely overturned," said Pierre Francois Le Louet, the agency's managing director.

Instead today's males are turning more towards "creativity, sensitivity and multiplicity," as seen already in recent seasons on the catwalks of Paris and Milan.

Arnold Schwarznegger and Sylvester Stallone are being replaced by the 21st-century man who "no longer wants to be the family super-hero", but instead has the guts to be himself, to test his own limits.

"We are watching the birth of a hybrid man. ... Why not put on a pink-flowered shirt and try out a partner-swapping club?" asked Le Louet, stressing that the study had focused on men aged between 20 and 35.

Sociologists and other experts spent three months analyzing some 150 magazines and books and 146 Internet sites, as well as interviewing a dozen experts from Europe, the United States and China.

The traditional man still exists in China, Le Louet said, and "is not ready to go". But in Europe and the United States, a new species is emerging, apparently unafraid of anything.

"He is looking for a more radical affirmation of who he is, and wants to test out all the barbarity of modern life" including in the sexual domain, said Le Louet, adding that Reebok with its "I am what I am" campaign had perfectly tapped into this current trend.

The emergence of this new male beast who wants to look and feel good, and who will also have an impact on the role of women, presages a new potentially lucrative market for the European fashion industry.

"All those labels which have adapted to this freedom of expression are on the up, all those which are too rigid will suffer in the future," Le Louet said, pointing to the growing success of sports and casual wear manufacturers.

Europe's economic downturn and stiff competition from China have left the industry -- which accounts for 7.0 percent of employment across the European Union or some 2.7 million jobs with an annual turnover of 230 billion euros -- in the doldrums.

The EU has already stepped in with new initiatives and with an aid package to support small and medium enterprises, particularly in the field of technical textiles.

But the search for new markets is also driving research to profile the new European consumer -- the theme of the debate held by Fashion Group, which unites some 6,000 fashion industry professionals.

The answer is not simple, as culture and changing demographics make it hard to pin down the typical European, especially with the growing population of elderly.

But even though society is changing, Jean-Pierre Fourcat, a director with consultants Sociovision specialising in discerning social trends, believes there are some common threads.

"There is an increasing desire for people to be in charge of their own lives, and an intolerance for any lack of autonomy," he told the debate.

"We are also moving into a different situation. We no longer need what we are used to, rather we need what is new. But a motorway without any signs is total panic. So we need some beacons ... and we need a little bit of fun."

Today's consumer wants to feel pampered, but also to be able to take time out, feel good and feel alive.

"We have to help people to create their own look. And we absolutely must help people to dream, and if we help people to dream perhaps the world will be a little bit better," he said.
Designer fashion for Korean homeless

SEOUL (Reuters) - Some South Korean homeless are dressing in style after the government gave away thousands of fake designer garments confiscated by customs agents.

The Korea Customs Service distributed more than 3,500 fake pieces in the southern city of Pusan this month with the permission of the fashion houses whose designs had been pirated.

A customs official declined to name the designers whose ripped-off creations are now being worn by the homeless but said both they and the state prosecutors had approved giving away the jackets, blouses, shirts and pants.

"We hope this will be of some help to the poor who need practical assistance in such hard times," the official said.

Customs agents removed the labels from the clothes before giving them to a welfare agency for distribution.

South Korea (news - web sites) has a vibrant illegal market in pirated designer clothing and customs officials said there would be more handouts.

"We will continue to look for useful ways to pass along the clothes -- it saves us the cost of destroying what we have confiscated," the Customs Service said in a statement.

One homeless man, who asked not to be identified, said he appreciated the fancy threads.

"I don't care about the quality of the clothes, but these designs are quite trendy," the recipient said.

Christian Dior: Napoleon in Rags Couture

January 25, 2005 - PARIS - "It’s Napoleon, as interpreted by Andy Warhol," beamed Bernard Arnault like a proud father, before posing for a photo with his most successful designer, John Galliano, minutes after his multi-media salon, haute couture show for Christian Dior.

Galliano took his bow as a Bonaparte in a red wig folowing a show that felt more like a work of performance art – video displays, live singers, rock band, violins and violas, with front-row rock stars adding to the mystique.

As French chanteuse Mireille Capelle sang Marianne Faithfull (news)’s biggest hit "As Tears Go By" with Faithfull sitting in the front row beside Sofia Coppola (news), the show kicked off with model Jacquetta Wheeler striding out in a Chelsea Girl outfit that recalled Edie Sedgwick in "Ciao Manhattan."

Two pyramids of TV monitors showed what looked like excerpts from Sedgwick’s classic role in that film. But on the closer inspection the scenes were in fact a video of Galliano casting models that was made to look like scenes from the movie. Talk about an in-joke.

Swinging sixties knee boots, fishnet tights, hot pants, Carnaby Street, big-buttoned coats and Faithfull’s famous flat jockey cap made up the first dozen looks. Not terribly couture, nor exactly wearable if you are former French first lady Madame Pompidou, who sat on a leather couch beside Arnault and his wife Helene, we’ll admit. Yet, they all looked great.

Suddenly, the strings took over in a wonderful serial lament – think Philip Glass grieving for the Petit Emperor’s exile – and Galliano reverted to his first love – Empress Josephine looks, though this season cut so large the models looked eight months pregnant.

"I call them fertility dresses. We could all do with putting on a little weight. Forget working on the abs, that costs so much pain," Galliano told FWD backstage, as Faithfull and Rolling Stones princess Theodora Richards embraced the designer.

Still, the clothes, though historic, looked fresh, as Galliano raided Directoire looks and high-waisted dresses in damask and devoré to come up with something new and exciting.

The show’s final third was dominated by local rock band Uminski, whose rendition of Bob Dylan (news)’s "Like a Rolling Stone," gave the game away, when the lead singer belted out the line "a Napoleon in rags."

But it's very much rags to riches at Dior these days. Under Galliano the brand has become a commercial triumph, and its very success has re-established Arnault as the man who everyone wants to work for. Ironically, after his assault on Gucci and acquisition binge, the French businessman was once seen as an avaricious luxury mogul. But today, with Tom Ford fired from Gucci and Helmut Lang slamming the door on his own house, he's seen as the ideal backer.

Asked about Lang, Arnault responded, "we don't comment on other business," but he practically chortled doing so.

It seemed apt to think of Helmut with Faithfull sitting beside Coppola who will shortly direct the singer in the part of the mother of Marie Antoinette. Let's not forget the favorite line of the French Revolution was Off with Their Heads.

Modern Clothes Are Unwearable, Says Cardin

PARIS (Reuters) - Modern clothes are unwearable and the fashion industry has been disfigured by big business and nudity, says legendary designer Pierre Cardin.
In an interview at his offices overlooking the French presidential palace, Cardin said true haute couture, the French phrase for the most exclusive work produced by a big fashion house, had vanished.

Haute couture dresses and outfits are sewn by hand and to the specific measurements of the client, ensuring something unique, the exact opposite of mass produced ready-to-wear.

"You no longer have the construction of a real silhouette. Before you had Balenciaga, Chanel, Courreges, Cardin ... Of these names, yes Dior still exists, but it's spectacle. It's superb, but it's a spectacle," said 82-year-old Cardin, one of France's last great fashion icons.

"You can't walk in shoes like that or hats like that -- to go where? You go to dinner and you need three chairs to sit down," said Cardin, who joined the Dior atelier in 1946 and shot to fame with his "bubble dress" in 1954.

"Intelligent women work nowadays, they drive cars, and the cars are smaller and smaller, while the dresses at Dior are bigger and bigger. It's very beautiful, but it's not fashion -- it's something else. It's costume."

Cardin was talking to Reuters about his 65 years in fashion as he considers offers for his $1.32 billion empire, which he recently put up for sale.

A U.N. peace ambassador who is also the only couturier in the prestigious institute that protects French culture, Cardin reflected on his career.

"I was very lucky. I was part of the post-war period when everything had to be redone. Women wanted to party, to dance, to amuse themselves; there was a sexy side. But now nudity is everywhere, sex is everywhere," he said.

"We undress men and women, we don't dress them any more."

"WHO WOULD BUY CARTIER-BRESSON?"

As for the thirst for labels that drove fashion giants like LVMH and Pinault Printemps Redoute into battle for control of Gucci, Cardin said a true couture house needed a true creator behind it.

"Gucci began as a suitcase with a stripe, (film maker Luchino) Visconti gave me one. I knew Monsieur Gucci, the grandfather. That's not the name of a creator," Cardin said.

"It's like a photographer who is a big name, like Henri Cartier-Bresson. Who would buy "Cartier-Bresson" and use it as a name?" he said.

"That is what has happened in fashion; we have completely disfigured this profession that was once very creative."

Master of a realm that spans everything from men's suits to the Maxim's restaurant concern, Cardin said it is now nearly impossible for a young couturier to make a mark.

"When I began in 1945 there were about 20 creators round the world. Today there are hundreds, everywhere, internationally. But there is practically no more fashion," said Cardin.

"If I were 20 I wouldn't know what to do because practically everything has been done."

But the man who has kept one step ahead of the fashion world for most of his career -- bringing runway shows to department stores in 1959 and couture to communist China in 1975 -- was also the first to take fashion to the street with ready-to-wear.

"IT WILL KILL YOUR NAME"

"They said pret-a-porter will kill your name and it saved me," he said.

Cardin was also the first to take the controversial step of licensing his label to an outside manufacturer.

"When I agreed my first license 45 years ago it was an enormous risk. People said no one would be talking about Pierre Cardin in two years and they were quite wrong -- those were the words of Dior and Saint-Laurent. The only one who is alive today and still being talked about is Pierre Cardin," he said.

Cardin's embrace of licensing -- when third parties manufacture items under a designer's name -- is anathema to much of today's luxury trade which admits only to farming out production of sunglasses, perfumes or jeans.

But Cardin, who built his empire without borrowing a single franc, defended his approach; his Pierre Cardin trademark now supports 900 licenses across 140 countries.

"I have a name, I have to take advantage of it," he said.

Ironically though, licensing has shut most Cardin boutiques; he now sells mainly through department and duty-free stores.

"I had 27 boutiques around the world at the time of (former French President Charles) de Gaulle, but we closed them because it bothered licensees. They said: you are competing with us."

Cardin applied the logic he used to expand his Pierre Cardin label to Maxim's, the Paris restaurant whose brand he has "stretched" across 800 licenses from chocolates to watches and pens. The restaurant appealed to him as a place for going out wearing stylish fashion and jewels.

Critics have turned up their noses, arguing that licensing devalues a brand, but Cardin may yet have the last laugh.

The designer, who reckons Maxim's and his couture interests are each worth at least 500 million euros, said he so far received 20 offers for his fashion empire.

"It's worth much more than that. It's the price of desire."

Wanna dress like a Barbie?

Mattel is gearing up to launch a Barbie line of clothes, accessories and perfume for adult women.
June 14, 2004: 9:43 AM EDT
By Parija Bhatnagar, CNN/Money staff writer

NEW YORK (CNN/Money ) - Barbie is about to break out of her curvaceous plastic mold and turn into a living breathing person. At least that's what toymaker Mattel hopes will happen when the company launches its Barbie line of clothing and accessories for women later this year.

El Segundo, Calif.-based Mattel (MAT: Research, Estimates), the No. 1 toymaker, showcased its new Barbie brand of vintage T-shirts, cocktail dresses, shoes and coats this week in New York at the International Licensing show.

Mattel spokeswoman Elissa Goldman said the clothing collection, which debuted earlier this year in Japan, could be in U.S. stores as early as this fall.

"Mattel opened five Barbie stores in Japan this year and the collection is hugely popular," said Goldman. "Barbie has been around for 45 years and most girls and women have emotions tied to her. We're treading carefully with this concept in the U.S. market because the company wants to make sure it makes sense here."

Mattel recently launched the Barbie vintage-inspired T-shirt, priced at about $50 at the high-end department store chain Nordstrom (JWN: Research, Estimates).

Mattel debuted its new Barbie fashion line for women this week in New York.
Said Goldman, "The collection is inspired from the clothes that Barbie wears since she's is perceived to be a fashion icon in her own right. But it's also a mixture of contemporary fashion trends."

And there is also a Barbie fragrance and cosmetics for adults in the works, Goldman said. "With the whole collection, Mattel is exploring new markets and extensions for the Barbie brand. One area that looked obvious is the adult market since there are many women who are already Barbie fans."
